How to write a Cover Letter

A cover letter is a short but powerful document essential for job search.

While resume gets the employer to call you for an interview the cover letter gets the employer  interested in your resume.

It gives the employer reasons to open your resume.

What is the Purpose of a Cover Letter?

The purpose of the cover letter simply is to get the employer interested in seeing your resume.

How long should a Cover Letter be?

The cover letter should ideally be no longer than one page. Remember that the cover letter has to be short, to the point, concise and powerful.

The address to and from addresses date signatures all should come within a single page.

Preparation for Writing a Cover Letter

To adequately prepare for writing a cover letter one has to have the resume as well as the job description in front of him/her.

What should I write in the Cover Letter?

The cover letter can include the following components:

Your address

For a letter sent by post put your address on the top left.

Employer’s Address

This can come right after your address.

The designation of the person you are addressing.

Here you will address to whom you intend this letter to reach.

Example:

To The V.P-Human Resources

Company Name

Greeting

You can use a greeting such as

Dear Mr.Paul,

OR if the name is not known

Respected Sir/Madam

Introduction

Here you state clearly the reason why you are writing to them including the exact designation advertised and where.

For example

I am contacting you regarding the Associate Engineer requirement or post on ______.com

Summary of your Profile

Summarise your profile and background using the key criteria that you have which match the requirements identified from prior research you have done on the job requirements and company.

Your Interest in the job

It would be good to add a mention of why you are applying for this job what’s it that you find interesting, motivating, etc.

Establish a Match with the Job Requirements

Try to concisely establish that you match the criteria.

Arrange / Clarify the next steps

In the end, do not forget to clarify the steps you intend to take.

So it could be asking them for an appointment or even requesting a good time to call.

Here are some things to avoid mentioning in your cover letter:

  • Bad experiences in your job
  • Number of other companies applied for
  • Salary requirements
  • Family details
  • Anything criticizing any employer
